*Roanne had been a client of Anglicares Better Health with Self-Management Program for some time when she shared her inspirational story.
Roanne was struggling when she first worked up the courage to join our course. Still grieving the loss of her baby son, and the shock diagnosis of a serious chronic disease, she was crippled with grief and depression. Her husband had recently attempted suicide, and young Jack was caught in the middle of his parent's anguish.
During the six weeks Roanne attended this revolutionary program, she learnt a range of critical skills that helped her to cope with her symptoms and begin to address the issues that led to her depression. One of the things she says she loved most about the program was that she attended the weekly lessons in a friendly, supportive and positive environment. The social interaction transformed her approach to living with a chronic illness, and she was able to set achievable goals.
She told us that six-year-old Jack's school results were improving, as was her relationship with her husband. Her beaming smile and increased confidence told its own story.
Roanne's story brought tears of joy to the eyes of Sue Simpson, one of Anglicare's dedicated Learning and Development Facilitators.
"Roanne's transformation is typical of the incredibly powerful outcomes we witness from this program," Sue says. "Since Anglicare participated in the pilot program in 2008, we have been overwhelmed at how successful it has been in helping people not only cope with chronic illness, but improve their overall physical and mental health. It is a remarkable program that is literally transforming lives...one life at a time!"*Names changed to protect privacy of individual.
